Actually, I try very hard to avoid unpleasant surprises for my clients, especially when it comes to fees. Communication is the foundation of an effective attorney-client relationship. It's also a two-way street. I encourage my clients to ask questions if they don't understand what's happening with their case, or if they don't understand (or agree with) the necessity for certain services or charges.
